IELTS

IELTS

The EAL Department’s primary purpose is to help students develop their English skills so that they may go on to gain entry into the university of their choice. The majority of our students seek entry into universities such as the London School of Economics, Imperial College, UCL, Oxford and Cambridge for which an IELTS score of 7.0 or 7.5 is needed depending on the subject to be studied.

Students undertaking our EAL course have six lessons per week. These lessons run alongside a student’s GCSE or A-Level course. As with all other subjects, the class size is kept to a maximum of nine students. Classes are streamed according to students’ level of English.

Teachers use a variety of resources in their lessons such as books, videos, CDs, interactive and on-line resources to help students with their language skills. The College library also has an extensive collection of simplified and abridged versions of well-known books, to reinforce students’ learning.  Teaching focuses on the four key skills that are tested during the IELTS exam: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking

Tests are undertaken in the College on a weekly basis, under normal examination conditions, to measure the level of improvement and to discover if there any specific areas that need special attention. Students take the IELTS exam at the end of their first year of study. Some students may need to continue with the course in their second year.
